Biography
Simon Fox is an accomplished solo acoustic
guitarist hailing from Melbourne Australia. His
unique fingerstyle guitar technique underlies a
modern approach to composition and performance,
drawing upon a range of styles from Celtic to
bluegrass, ambient to classical. Early influences
include Will Ackerman and Michael Hedges, developing an
attention to melody and space in solo guitar pieces.
With recent influences Tony McManus, Steve Baughman and
Pat Kirtley, Simon’s playing has
drawn upon elements of more traditional music. Simon’s
most recent recording “A Winter’s Tale” has been
released in June 2006, and features 14 solo pieces for
the steel-string guitar. This follows his acclaimed
second album “Night Fishing”, which received excellent
review in American “Fingerstyle Guitar” magazine. In
2005 his tune “The Fisherman” was published with sheet
music in Mel Bay’s Fingerstyle Guitar Anthology Vol. 3”.
Music from the CD features on a range of Australian TV
programs and documentaries.
Simon has authored a detailed book for fingerstyle
guitarists, as well as producing the sheet music for the
“Night Fishing” CD. The book and CD have been signed for
distribution with Mel Bay publications in the USA for
tentative release in September 2007. In addition, Simon
recorded an instructional guitar DVD with Canadian group
Cox-Windswept Productions, covering a range of topics
with the DADGAD guitar tuning.
In April 2007, Simon performed at Australia's National Folk Festival in
Canberra for the first time. Previously in 2006, Simon played with the “Guitar Heaven”
tour of Western Australia with artists Desert Child and
Milica Ilic. Previously, Simon has performed at the
major Vancouver Island festivals, folk clubs in Calgary
and has been a regular at the Western Australian events
such as
Fairbridge Festival. Simon’s performance delivers a full
variety of dynamics on the acoustic guitar, with a dry
and personable sense of humor. The future will see Simon
promoting the new album in Australia and abroad.
